Justice or Double Standard? Abba Kyari Supporters Demand Tinubu’s Clemency
The Nigerian office of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider granting a presidential pardon to suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Friday, the Head of IHRC’s Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, Duru Hezekiah, urged the President to act in the interest of national security, citing the worsening insecurity in the country, including terrorism, kidnappings, and organised crime.
While affirming its respect for ongoing legal proceedings, the Commission called for a national conversation on the possibility of a strategic, conditional pardon for Kyari, in line with rising public support and broader national interest.
“Our intention is not to obstruct justice or undermine the rule of law,” Hezekiah clarified. “Rather, we advocate a forward-looking and constitutionally sound approach that considers the strategic value of experienced security personnel—if deemed eligible under the law and subject to strict public accountability.”
The IHRC referenced Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the President to grant pardons and reprieves, as a legitimate basis for such clemency.
The Commission further noted that there are global precedents where individuals with criminal records but unique skills have been granted conditional reprieves or reintegrated into public service. It cited examples from the United States, where plea deals and cooperation agreements are often used to secure intelligence, as well as post-conflict African nations where former warlords were granted amnesty to support peacebuilding.
“A conditional pardon for Abba Kyari—anchored in transparency and legal oversight—could potentially transform him from a controversial figure into a valuable asset in Nigeria’s security architecture,” the statement added.
The IHRC concluded by stating that President Tinubu is in a historic position to take this bold step, with growing public and institutional backing.
