Ghana Tightens the Noose: Nigerians Cry Out Over Business, Housing Discrimination
Nigerians residing in Ghana have strongly condemned the recent “Nigerians Must Go” protest, which erupted in parts of the country on Tuesday, July 29, describing it as a deliberate attempt to trigger a diplomatic standoff between the two West African nations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Members of the Nigerian community accused some Ghanaian citizens of long-standing discrimination, economic sabotage, and deep-rooted animosity against Nigerians living and doing business in the country.
The protest saw dozens of Ghanaians take to the streets with placards, chanting slogans and demanding the expulsion of Nigerians. Accusations ranged from rising crime — including prostitution and ritual killings — to fears over economic dominance by Nigerians.
Viral videos from the protest showed participants wearing red t-shirts and waving Ghanaian flags. Placards bore provocative inscriptions such as: “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop”, “Our kids are going missing because of Igbos”, “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals”, “Who protects the rights and freedoms of Ghanaians?”, and “Our health is at stake due to mass prostitution.”
In one video, a protester shouted: “Nigerians must go because you can’t be in someone’s country and behave anyhow. Nigerians must go!” Another echoed: “They even have an Igbo king in Ghana. They’ve hijacked our lands. It’s just a matter of time; we will conquer them and reclaim our country.”
Nigerians in Ghana, however, say the protest reflects worsening xenophobia and an orchestrated campaign to force them out of the country. Many pointed fingers at Ghanaian landlords and state policies as key instruments of discrimination.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, a Nigerian businessman, Patrick Isaac, decried what he described as “exorbitant rent hikes” and “unfair business regulations” targeted specifically at Nigerians. He said the protest was an intentional provocation aimed at inciting violence and damaging bilateral relations.
“This is not new. We anticipated the protest. Igbo traders had a meeting where we were warned not to react to provocations, because their goal is to push us into retaliating, which would then spark a diplomatic crisis between Ghana and Nigeria,” Isaac stated.
He stressed that the protest had nothing to do with recent remarks by a self-acclaimed Igbo leader in Ghana, Chukwudi Ihenetu, but rather stemmed from deep-seated envy and hostility.
“Nigerians here are constantly profiled and presumed to be wealthy. Landlords charge Nigerians as much as five times more than Ghanaians. If you can’t pay, they chase you out. When we succeed in business, they raise rents to drive us away and take over,” he explained.
Isaac added: “The protest is not about Chukwudi Ihenetu. It is because Nigerians, especially traders, have attained a higher standard of living here. That success breeds resentment, and now it’s boiling over.”
He also lamented what he described as the “silence” of the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana, accusing the diplomatic mission of failing to defend its citizens from sustained harassment and targeted crackdowns.
Another Nigerian trader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the protest as part of a broader scheme to push Nigerians — particularly those in retail trade — out of business. He referenced the controversial $1 million capital requirement by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), which mandates foreign investors to provide cash or raw material equivalent before they can legally operate in Ghana.
“This started long ago. In 2017, they tried to ban foreigners from retail trade and insisted we could only engage in wholesale if we hired locals. In 2019, Nigerian shops were shut en masse. Now, they’re using protests and regulations to frustrate us. The pressure on Igbo traders is especially intense because of our economic visibility,” he said.
Emmanuel Chubike, a fashion designer from Imo State, said housing discrimination was worsening, with Nigerian tenants bearing the brunt of rising hostility.
“Getting an apartment here is a nightmare. Some Nigerians involved in crime have made things worse for the rest of us. My landlord just increased my rent by 50%, and many others have received quit notices. This is no coincidence — it’s about the tensions growing between both communities,” Chubike stated.
He appealed to the Ghanaian authorities to intervene and prevent further escalation, urging both the Nigerian and Ghanaian governments to foster mutual understanding and ensure the safety and dignity of their citizens.
