Bold Prediction: Ogunmodede Confident Home Eagles Will Stun Senegal in CHAN Opener
Head coach of the home-based Super Eagles, Oladunni Ogunmodede, has voiced confidence in his team’s preparedness to take on reigning champions Senegal in their opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Speaking ahead of the high-stakes encounter, Ogunmodede acknowledged the strength of Souleymane Diallo’s side but expressed optimism about his squad’s chances.
“Senegal are the title holders, no doubt, and they’ll want to defend their crown. But we’re ready to challenge them and put up a strong fight,” Ogunmodede said in an interview with ESPN.
To bolster their readiness, the home-based Eagles engaged in two warm-up friendlies against Zanzibar earlier this week, helping the players adapt to the conditions and refine their tactical play.
Nigeria last participated in the tournament in 2018, finishing as runners-up to hosts Morocco. The team’s third-place finish at the 2014 edition in South Africa remains one of their most memorable CHAN achievements.
In a nostalgic nod to that golden era, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently honoured former Super Eagles winger Ejike Uzoenyi as one of CHAN’s all-time greats.
Uzoenyi, renowned for his explosive pace and pinpoint left-footed crosses, was the standout star of the 2014 tournament, where he was named Most Valuable Player. His performances earned him a place in Nigeria’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad and contributed to the Super Eagles’ victorious 2013 AFCON campaign.
