The decision to down tools was reached during an Emergency Congress convened by the Joint Action Committee.

While full details of the grievances were yet to be made public at the time of this report, sources indicate that the strike is linked to longstanding welfare concerns and unresolved issues between the staff and university management.

The letter—jointly signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, ASUU Secretary Sylvester Idowu, SSANU Chairman Oluwaseyi Lawal, and SSANU Secretary Waheed Majekodunmi—was titled “Notice of Indefinite Strike Action.”

An excerpt from the letter reads:

“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU & NASU-LASU) that an INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION should commence effective from Thursday 31st July, 2025, we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University.

The unions concluded the letter by expressing gratitude for past cooperation while reaffirming their resolve to press home their demands.

Momodu had argued that a pairing of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could perform strongly in the election, citing their past collaboration in 2019 and Obi’s 2023 electoral performance.

Responding, Tanko questioned the logic of choosing a candidate who might win a primary but lose the general election, insisting that the Obi–Kwankwaso combination would be more formidable.

He further warned that if the ADC fails to zone its presidential ticket to the South, the party risks losing the 2027 election.
