Shockwaves in Police Force! Court Demands IG Present Ex-AIG Facing Impersonation Charges

Published

on

The Magistrate Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure the appearance of retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Oyediran Oyeyemi, in court over allegations of impersonating a serving officer.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The directive was issued on Wednesday following a ruling in a case brought by counsel to the complainant, Anthony Agbazuere.

According to the charge, Oyeyemi—who officially exited the police force on March 3, 2024—is accused of continuing to present himself as an active Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

The complainant, Uche Ezike, alleged that on May 6, 2024, Oyeyemi issued a letter bearing his former rank without indicating his retirement status.

At the resumed hearing, the defendant was absent, prompting Agbazuere to seek a bench warrant for his arrest.

“The defendant was duly served on July 24 but has failed to comply with the court’s order to appear,” Agbazuere told the court.

He further claimed that Oyeyemi still wears his police uniform and displays it in his office, leveraging his position as Secretary of the Police Cooperative Society.

According to Agbazuere, the retired officer routinely omits his retirement status in official communications, thus misleading the public and violating Section 132 of the Penal Code, which deals with impersonation.

In a brief ruling, Magistrate Sunday Adukwu emphasized that despite Oyeyemi’s previous high-ranking position, the gravity of the allegations warrants his physical presence in court.

Consequently, the court ordered the IGP to produce the retired AIG in court on September 8, when the case is scheduled to continue.
