Public Pressure Wins? Oyo Denies Alleged Plan to Commercialise Car Park Space
The Oyo State Government on Wednesday refuted allegations that it had replaced the car park at the Bola Ige International Business Complex (commonly known as Gbagi Market) with newly constructed shops and had extorted money from unsuspecting traders overnight.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The rebuttal came through a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on behalf of the Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Adeniyi Adebisi, in Ibadan.
Adebisi described the claims as “entirely false, mischievous, and a deliberate distortion of facts” concerning an ongoing and carefully planned redevelopment initiative.
He clarified that the redevelopment of Gbagi Market is being executed in phases under the direct supervision of the ministry and in close collaboration with the market leadership and zonal traders’ associations.
According to him, the area in question was never an officially designated car park but rather an underutilised open space that had become a hotspot for illegal trading activities and posed security challenges.
“After extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, it was resolved that the space be redeveloped into formal stalls to enhance organisation, improve access, and ensure safety within the market,” he said.
He further explained that the designated main car park remains intact and has not been encroached upon. The newly constructed shops, he added, are located outside the central parking area.
“All allocations were conducted transparently and not in secret or overnight,” Adebisi stated. “The process was documented and coordinated jointly by government agencies and the traders’ leadership.
“Interested traders were informed of standardised shop allocation fees in advance and were given the freedom to either accept or decline — contrary to claims of forced payments.”
He assured that no trader would be unfairly displaced and reiterated the government’s commitment to adhering strictly to the market’s agreed master plan.
The commissioner urged members of the public and media organisations to fact-check their information before publishing reports that could mislead residents or cause unnecessary tension.
He also encouraged market leaders and traders to address any grievances or inquiries through the ministry’s Market Support Desk or via assigned liaison officers.
“This misinformation is the handiwork of opposition elements desperate to politicise every progressive move of the current administration,” Adebisi concluded, urging stakeholders to ignore the falsehoods being circulated.
