The initiative, championed by the acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bukar Jamri, seeks to establish shelterbelts to shield university structures from strong winds, increase shaded areas, create natural parking spaces, and enhance the overall ecological landscape.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the university emphasized that the campaign is part of a broader effort to foster a more conducive learning environment and promote environmental sustainability.

“More than 2,000 seedlings, including both economic and non-economic species, have been cultivated and planted across the campus,” the statement read.

Professor Jamri expressed optimism that the trees would go beyond ecological value to enhance the beauty and comfort of the university community.
“We hope these trees bring long-term benefits — cooling the environment, protecting infrastructure, and offering shade to students and staff,” he said.

The tree-planting covered key areas such as the Administrative Block, the New Male Hostel, the Geology and Microbiology Departments, and campus roadsides.

The university’s Landscaping Officer, Malam Yusuf Damazai, credited the success of the project to the strong support from the acting Vice-Chancellor and the university’s management.

“This effort has been made possible through the consistent encouragement and commitment of our leadership,” he noted.

Prominent university officials, including the Chief Security Officer, Col. Zanna Kaumi (retd.), and the Director of Information and Protocol, Hajiya Uwani Mamuda, also took part in the launch event.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.
