We’re Bigger Than Atiku – Adamawa PDP Fires Back at Defection Rumours”

The Adamawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asserted that the departure of former Vice President and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, from the party will have no adverse impact on its chances in the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking exclusively with Arewa PUNCH on Monday, the PDP Organising Secretary in the state, Hamza Madagali, downplayed the effect of Atiku’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), revealing that only three out of over 286 party executives at the local government and ward levels followed him.

“Only the PDP chairman of Jada Local Government, the women leader, and one ward executive left with the former vice president. The rest remain firmly with the PDP,” he said.

Madagali stressed that the PDP in Adamawa is a deeply rooted political institution that cannot be dismantled by any single individual, asserting that the party continues to represent the aspirations of the people.

“The PDP is like a public trust in Adamawa. It is oversubscribed by the people, and no single person can collapse what the people have built,” he declared.

Echoing this stance, a prominent PDP figure from Michika Local Government Area, Mr. Luka Tizhe Tumba, described Atiku’s departure as a divine intervention.

“He has always been a stumbling block for the party, especially during election periods. The people of Adamawa have seen little to no political benefit from his influence, even during his time as vice president,” Tumba stated.

Tumba, who hails from Michika—the largest LGA in the state with 16 wards—argued that the only figure whose exit could significantly shake the PDP is Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

“Other political heavyweights in Adamawa are like generals without troops. How can such commanders wage a successful battle?” he questioned.

Also weighing in, the PDP State Chairman, Barrister Tahir Shehu, dismissed Atiku’s exit as politically inconsequential.

“Adamawa remains the traditional base of the PDP. Let’s not forget that Atiku himself was elected governor in 1999 under our party before becoming vice president,” he said.

Shehu noted that the PDP’s only electoral loss in the state came in 2015 under President Goodluck Jonathan, when a candidate imposed from Abuja was rejected by voters at the polls.

He added that the party bounced back in 2019 and has since maintained firm control under Governor Fintiri’s leadership, which he believes cannot be challenged in 2027.

“Atiku’s exit will not shake the PDP in Adamawa. The party enjoys overwhelming support from the people, and that is what matters most,” Shehu concluded.
