Zoning Won’t Save PDP – ADC Claims New Role as Nigeria’s Most Serious Opposition”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared its intention to be a formidable force—not merely a participant—in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking with Vanguard on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made it clear that the ADC is not preoccupied with the often divisive issue of zoning, unlike other major political parties. He stressed that while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has failed to provide a credible alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ADC is determined to build a strong, people-oriented movement grounded in principles, not regional compromises.

“Our approach to 2027 is built on merit and national interest, not outdated zoning formulas,” Abdullahi said. “We’re not just looking to contest—we’re building a serious platform capable of winning.”

He explained that the ADC’s priority is to develop grassroots capacity nationwide to contest for positions across all levels—governorships, the Senate, House of Representatives, and state assemblies. “The presidency is important, but we are not treating it as the only prize worth pursuing. That narrow focus is part of the dysfunction in Nigerian politics,” he added.

According to him, the ADC’s goal is not simply to change who holds office, but to transform the way politics is done in Nigeria. “Our emphasis is on readiness, structure, and credibility. The ADC is offering Nigerians a genuine alternative—not just a new name, but a completely different vision.”

Abdullahi criticised both the APC and PDP for prioritising power-sharing over competence and national unity, arguing that the ADC is a deliberate and principled response to Nigeria’s broken political culture.

“Unlike the APC, which was born out of expediency in 2013 as a coalition to oust the PDP, the ADC was created as a necessary intervention—a conscious response to the creeping emergence of a one-party state,” he said. “Over the past decade, meaningful opposition has virtually disappeared. The APC has ruled without effective checks, while the PDP has failed to articulate a clear alternative.”

He argued that the ADC is stepping into this vacuum with a new kind of politics—focused, principled, and people-driven. “We are not here to play reactionary politics. We are here to offer solutions. We are building from the ground up, and that’s where real political transformation begins.”

Abdullahi pointed to the ADC’s growing momentum, particularly in the South East, South South, and South West, as evidence of a rising movement. “Yes, Peter Obi has wide appeal, but beyond personalities, we have credible organisers and leaders across these regions building strong, community-based structures. The turnout in Ekiti over the weekend was no fluke. Aregbesola’s recent mobilisation in Osun is another sign. Something is clearly stirring—and the ADC is giving it direction.”

He concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to grassroots mobilisation and issue-based politics: “We’re not in this to make noise. We’re here to win hearts and minds with ideas, solutions, and a renewed vision for Nigeria.”
