Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, issued a statement on Sunday debunking the report, which had claimed that a heated altercation took place between the two senior lawmakers during the closed-door session held on Tuesday, July 23, 2025.
The report suggested that the disagreement stemmed from internal tensions and growing dissatisfaction among senators regarding Akpabio’s leadership style and decision-making process. It also insinuated that the executive session featured sharp exchanges, fueling speculation about possible divisions within the Senate’s top hierarchy.
Adaramodu, however, firmly denied the allegations, clarifying that no such clash occurred. According to him, what transpired was a normal internal discussion, typical of parliamentary proceedings, and should not be misrepresented as a power struggle.
“The Senate remains united and fully committed to the leadership under Senator Godswill Akpabio,” he said. “The session in question involved routine deliberations on whether to proceed with the annual recess — a matter that was thoroughly discussed as part of our democratic tradition.”
He stressed that vigorous debate is a vital component of parliamentary democracy and should not be mistaken for internal discord.
“Our attention has been drawn to various media reports claiming a clash between the President of the Senate and the Senate Leader during an executive session. These reports are completely false. What was presented as conflict is, in reality, the standard practice in parliaments across the world,” the statement read.
Adaramodu added that the Senate’s debates, whether in plenary or closed sessions, reflect its responsibility to scrutinize all legislative initiatives in the national interest.
“The Nigerian Senate, like any functional legislative body, thrives on informed and robust debate. Every motion, bill, or proposal undergoes critical analysis by members, regardless of political affiliation, as part of the democratic process,” he stated.
He further cautioned against interpreting passionate policy discussions as signs of leadership rifts.
“Whether in committee rooms or the chamber, such deliberations must not be misconstrued as personal altercations. They do not, in any way, suggest division or a crack within the leadership of the Senate,” Adaramodu concluded.
