Govt House Over People? PDP Accuses Abdulrazaq of Abandoning Kwara’s Real Needs

In a statement released on Monday by the PDP’s State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the opposition party accused the governor of attempting to mask financial recklessness and public fund mismanagement as infrastructural development.
Adewara said the party was alarmed by the move, especially at a time when large swathes of the state are grappling with severe infrastructure decay.
“Across Kwara, communities are burdened by dilapidated roads, crumbling school buildings, under-equipped hospitals, and deepening poverty,” the statement read.
The PDP questioned the logic behind initiating such a massive project with less than two years left in Abdulrazaq’s tenure.
“What urgent need does a new Government House Secretariat fulfil at this terminal stage of the administration?” Adewara asked.
PDP: Existing Government House Wasted and Abandoned
The party further faulted the justification for a new secretariat, noting that the current Government House in Ilorin remains largely unused, despite its luxury and aesthetics.
“Since 2019, the governor has barely used the existing facility, yet hundreds of millions of naira are allocated annually for its upkeep,” the statement alleged.
The PDP also cited that in 2021, the Abdulrazaq administration earmarked ₦3.2 billion for the renovation of the existing Government House but failed to show tangible benefits to citizens.
‘Come Clean, Show the Papers’ – PDP to Abdulrazaq
Demanding transparency, the party challenged the state government to publish full details of the proposed project — including contract awards and budget breakdowns.
“Kwarans have the right to know how their collective wealth is being spent, especially in this time of economic hardship and growing public discontent,” it stated.
‘Otoge Betrayed’: PDP Accuses Govt of Favouring Foreign Contractor
The PDP further alleged that the controversial contract was being handed to a foreign firm, contradicting the administration’s ‘Otoge’ promise of promoting local contractors and indigenous enterprise.
“This completely undermines the commitment to empower local professionals and stimulate the state’s economy,” the PDP said.
Calling on Kwarans to resist what it described as “vanity projects,” the party urged residents to stay vigilant and demand fiscal accountability from their leaders.
“We must not allow this administration to mortgage the future of our children on ego-driven projects with no real value,” the statement concluded.
