We Take Full Responsibility’: VON Bows to Pressure, Apologises for Erroneous WAFCON Coverage
The Voice of Nigeria (VON) has publicly apologised for an inaccurate report it published during the final match of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Falcons of Nigeria staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Morocco 3–2 and claim a record‑extending 10th title.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement on Sunday, the organisation’s Director‑General/CEO, Jibrin Ndace, admitted the error and announced a series of reforms aimed at preventing a recurrence.
The now‑deleted article had prematurely declared Morocco the winners while the match was still ongoing. Ndace described the report—which inaccurately announced Nigeria’s defeat before full time—as “erroneous” and “deeply unfortunate.”
“On behalf of the management and staff of the Voice of Nigeria, I sincerely thank everyone who reached out with concern and constructive feedback following the regrettable publication on the night of Saturday, 26th July 2025, regarding the WAFCON 2025 Final,” he said.
“The report, which falsely declared a Nigerian loss before the match ended, was both inaccurate and deeply regrettable. Voice of Nigeria celebrates with all Nigerians as our Super Falcons fought back heroically to beat hosts Morocco 3–2 and secure a historic 10th continental title.”
Ndace acknowledged the confusion caused by the report and revealed that investigations were ongoing to determine whether a security breach contributed to the incident.
“We sincerely apologise for the misinformation and the confusion it created. Initial findings suggest an internal lapse, but we are also probing the possibility of a cyber intrusion or identity compromise. As a public institution, we cannot ignore such risks, and we are taking decisive steps to fortify our digital platforms,” he said.
The DG clarified that no individual staff member was being singled out for blame, noting that the incident highlighted the need for stronger institutional safeguards.
“In reviewing and strengthening our editorial processes, we are not pinning responsibility on any one person. This experience underscores the importance of comprehensive systems to prevent such errors in the future,” Ndace explained.
To rebuild trust, VON announced new editorial structures, including an Investigative Desk, a Fact‑Checking Unit, and a Monitoring and Evaluation Team, alongside strategic staff redeployments.
“These reforms are part of our broader commitment to reposition VON as a more responsive, transparent, and globally respected media organisation. We remain dedicated to our pillars of People, Platform, and Partnership,” Ndace said.
He expressed gratitude to the public for their feedback and support, adding, “Your voices remind us that accountability is not a burden—it is the foundation of true public service. Thank you for standing with us in moments of celebration and in moments of reflection and growth.”
