Speaking on Thursday at the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Mohammed declared that the PDP is poised to give the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a serious challenge in the next general elections.
He appealed to members to refrain from attacking those who have defected from the PDP, expressing confidence that such individuals will eventually realise their mistakes.
“We will give the APC a credible run for their money, on a level playing field, as a party that is truly in touch with the people,” he said.
Mohammed stressed that the PDP remains the most viable platform to lead any future political alliance or coalition, given its position as the country’s main opposition party.
“We don’t need to make noise or stir up more divisions. We are working quietly behind the scenes—through the NWC, the BOT, the National Assembly caucuses, and our state chapters—to keep the party intact and provide Nigerians with a platform to realise their dreams.”
Reiterating his message of restraint, Mohammed continued:
“As the BoT Secretary rightly said, this is not a time for name‑calling or insults. We sympathise with those who became impatient and left, but in time they will understand their misstep. Our doors remain open for them to return, within a reasonable window.”
The governor, however, warned that the PDP would no longer tolerate acts of indiscipline, noting that internal discord had caused the party significant setbacks in the past.
“We will not continue to condone indiscipline. It is indiscipline that brought us many of our problems. The party has shown resilience, and our governors, just like the NWC, have faced enormous challenges. We must acknowledge the NWC for their magnanimity and selflessness in agreeing to step aside earlier than expected—showing they are with us.”
Mohammed praised the party’s founding fathers for helping restore its image, commending recent engagements that, in his words, “have repositioned the PDP where it ought to be.”
He concluded by calling for unity and selflessness among party members:
“We are ready to work together so that no personal ambition will divide us. Our individual aspirations—whether as governors or presidential hopefuls—must never come before the national interest. We must collectively ensure a level playing field that will be recognised and attested to by INEC.”
