ADC Bombshell! Atiku’s Plan to Run Again Could Derail Us – Obi and El‑Rufai Already Eyeing the
There are growing concerns within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that key figures in the opposition coalition—including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai—may withdraw from the alliance over Atiku Abubakar’s insistence on running for president in 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Findings indicate that several early promoters of the ADC coalition, among them El‑Rufai, are now reconsidering their involvement due to disagreements surrounding Atiku’s push to clinch the party’s presidential ticket—an ambition many fear could undermine the coalition’s chances in 2027.
El‑Rufai, who was a vocal advocate for a southern presidency in 2023, is said to be adamant that the presidency should remain in the South until 2031.
Although former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi have already signaled their interest in contesting from the South, it remains unclear which aspirant El‑Rufai intends to support.
A member of the party’s interim management team, who spoke anonymously to BusinessDay in Abuja, expressed worry that Atiku’s ambition could jeopardize the ADC’s prospects:
“Yes, everyone is excited about the new coalition and the opportunity it presents Nigerians in 2027, but Atiku Abubakar’s plan to contest may ruin our chances,” the source said.
The official added that while the ADC would not bar Atiku from pursuing his ambition and would ensure a level playing field, his insistence on running might weaken the party unless he reconsiders.
“As you know, Nasir El‑Rufai played a key role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu in 2023. Even now, he maintains that the presidency should remain in the South and has made that position very clear,” the source explained.
