“From Newsrooms to Policy Rooms – NESG Launches Media Collaboration Offensive”

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has underscored the critical role of cross‑border collaboration, strategic use of data, and active media engagement in driving sustainable economic growth in Nigeria and across Africa.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A high‑level NESG delegation, led by Mojisola Saka, Head of Media and Publicity, and the Group’s Chief Economist, Dr. Olusegun Omisakin, made this known during a courtesy visit to the corporate headquarters of Punch Nigeria Limited on Wednesday.

Omisakin described the media as indispensable partners in nation‑building, shaping public discourse on economic policies, governance, and evidence‑based development. He stressed that Nigeria’s challenges in education, infrastructure, energy, and data integrity require sustained public conversations anchored on accurate information.

“We’re not a government agency. NESG operates as an independent platform that connects citizens, data, and policy. We depend on community support to generate the evidence needed to influence reforms,” he said.

He explained that the organisation engages both the public and private sectors through thematic policy commissions and its flagship annual summit, which produces the “Green Book”—a document containing resolutions and policy recommendations shared with government and industry leaders.

Omisakin further highlighted NESG’s policy accountability framework, which tracks how summit resolutions are implemented. Despite existing challenges, he noted that the Group has recorded progress in areas such as sustainable energy, agriculture, leadership, and governance.

He also stressed the urgency of improving data integrity, describing data as “the foundation of development.”

“We can’t plan if we can’t count our children, track school enrolments, or monitor population movement. Without fixing our data problems, discussions about food security or national security remain incomplete,” he cautioned.

In her remarks, Saka emphasised that NESG’s work goes beyond convening summits.

“We ensure there is follow‑up. For instance, frameworks for the creative economy and sports policy that originated from past summits have now evolved into actionable government strategies,” she explained.

She reflected on how sustained dialogue has historically driven change in Nigeria’s infrastructure, citing improvements in telecommunications and banking systems as examples of what focused engagement can achieve.

“It’s through commitment and participation—even in small rooms like this—that progress happens. We’re no longer debating phone call costs or spending all day queuing to cash a cheque. Now we are tackling bigger issues such as inclusive growth, fiscal responsibility, and effective leadership,” Saka added.

The visit ended with a call to action, urging media organisations like The PUNCH to continue amplifying critical national conversations.

“The media doesn’t just tell the story; it frames the policy dialogue that can move this country forward,” Saka said.
