A National Emergency’: Alarming Surge in Cancer Cases Threatens Nigeria’s Health System
Medical experts on Thursday warned that Nigeria is grappling with an escalating cancer crisis, cautioning that reported cases are set to rise as wider access to diagnostic tools and enhanced surveillance systems begin to reveal the country’s true cancer burden.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
They explained that the projected increase would not only stem from better detection but also from growing exposure to risk factors such as unhealthy diets, tobacco use, excessive alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyles, and late presentation at health facilities.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the five most prevalent cancers in Nigeria are breast cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, and non‑Hodgkin lymphoma.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, disclosed that Nigeria records an estimated 127,000 cancer cases annually, with about 80,000 deaths.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly built Oncology Centre at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, Pate said, “Nigeria accounts for 127,000 cancer cases each year, with around 80,000 deaths. That is the burden we face.”
He described non‑communicable diseases such as cancer as fast‑emerging threats, noting that beyond the human suffering, they impose heavy financial strain on families. Pate reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving healthcare under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that cancer treatment centres would be established across all six geopolitical zones to encourage early detection and cut mortality rates.
Meanwhile, experts warned that the country’s cancer burden could be even larger than current figures suggest, driven by unhealthy lifestyles, poor health‑seeking behaviour, and growing public awareness, alongside improvements in diagnostics and surveillance.
Dr. Adamu Umar, Chairman of the Oncology and Cancer Care Committee of the Nigerian Medical Association, said a surge in reported cancer cases should be expected, not necessarily because more people are developing cancer, but because improved systems are now uncovering previously undetected cases.
“Our current cancer statistics are far from the reality on the ground. For every recorded case, there are likely many others unreported or undiagnosed,” Umar told our correspondent.
He noted that Nigeria had made significant strides in recent years, with new diagnostic centres, world‑class treatment facilities, and better coordination among hospitals revealing cases that would have gone unnoticed in the past. Institutions like the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment have strengthened surveillance, leading to improved detection rates.
Umar, a former president of the Nigerian Cancer Society, also highlighted the emergence of local cancer registries, which are beginning to paint a clearer picture of the nation’s cancer burden.
“We are entering an era where better data collection, heightened awareness, and improved diagnostic access are exposing the true magnitude of cancer in Nigeria,” he said
