Political Uncertainty Deepens as Hakeem Baba‑Ahmed Questions Tinubu’s Quiet on Shettima

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Baba‑Ahmed said the President ought to have addressed the rumours directly to lay them to rest.
The speculation intensified in June after the APC stakeholders’ summit in Gombe, where party loyalists openly endorsed Tinubu for re‑election but made no reference to Shettima. That omission triggered widespread debate, with claims surfacing that plans were underway to drop the vice president.
Although Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga dismissed the rumours as a “non‑issue,” saying Tinubu would only decide on a running mate after the party’s next convention, Baba‑Ahmed argued that the matter required an unequivocal statement from the President himself.
“In a presidential system, the candidate is nominated before a running mate is chosen,” Onanuga had said, while denying any rift between Tinubu and Shettima.
However, Baba‑Ahmed insisted that the President’s own voice was necessary to douse tension:
“To be honest, the President should have done something long ago.
If these stories about dropping the vice president for someone else—maybe another northerner, maybe a Christian—have absolutely no truth in them, it would only take one thing: the President personally saying, Stop this nonsense.
I have confidence in my vice president, I work well with him, I am happy with him, and I want this talk of dropping him now or in the future to end. I will decide on a running mate in 2027 when the time comes. For now, we have work to do. But he didn’t say that. His people didn’t say that.”
Baba‑Ahmed stressed that Tinubu’s silence has created unease and needless political tension:
“It’s worrying—let me just say it is worrying.
If what I have said is what the President believes, then he should have said it. Even if not in those exact words, he should have found a way. But it should come from him, be direct, and be emphatic.”
