Lamido Fires Back at Defection Claims: “I Won’t Abandon My Skin for a Smaller ADC”

A former Governor of Jigawa State and prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Sule Lamido, has dismissed speculation about an alleged plan to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Lamido reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP while admitting that the party is facing internal challenges. However, he declared his willingness to support any political arrangement—whether within or outside the PDP—that can secure and stabilise Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists in Kano on Tuesday, Lamido, who once served as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stated:

“I believe in Nigeria. So, any arrangement, be it within or outside the Peoples Democratic Party, that will secure and save Nigeria, I am ready to work with it in 2027.”

‘I Won’t Renounce My PDP Legacy’ – Lamido

Responding to rumours of a possible defection, Lamido was emphatic:

“I’m still in PDP, even though PDP has some problems. But I cannot renounce my history. I can’t simply walk out of my skin and crawl into flesh and blood and be conferred with a smaller skin called ADC. I cannot.”

Lamido, who governed Jigawa from 2007 to 2015 under the PDP, said the party gave him key political opportunities and shaped his identity.

“So, I cannot simply renounce my history, my legacy, and my heritage and say, ‘Today I’ve got something new. I am out of PDP.’ I will not do that,” he affirmed.

On growing calls for the creation of additional states, Lamido acknowledged the legitimacy of such demands but questioned whether they would solve Nigeria’s real problems.

“Will the creation of new states solve our problems— insecurity, poverty, hunger, and the division between the North and the South? There are more pressing issues than creating additional states,” he said.

While acknowledging that state creation and restructuring might hold political or symbolic significance, Lamido insisted that Nigeria’s urgent priorities should be tackling its worsening economic and security challenges.

He also commented on the recent visit of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, describing it as perfectly within Kwankwaso’s rights.

“Kwankwaso is a citizen of Nigeria and a former governor. He has every right to visit the president of the country,” Lamido stated.

Although the visit has fueled speculation about potential political realignments in the North ahead of 2027, Lamido gave no indication of his own involvement, reiterating only his openness to any credible platform that can “secure and save” Nigeria.
