Victory for Industry Workers! Nigeria to Get Oil & Gas Hospital as Senate Passes Bill”

Published

The Senate has approved a bill to establish the Federal Oil and Gas Hospital in Benikrukru, Warri South‑West Local Government Area of Delta State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The approval came after the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Health, chaired by Senator Banigo Ipalibo Harry (PDP, Rivers), during plenary on Tuesday.

While presenting the report, Senator Harry explained that the proposed hospital—sponsored by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (APC, Delta South)—is intended to deliver critical medical services to oil and gas workers as well as to host communities directly affected by exploration activities.

She noted that the hospital would be a specialised centre for treating health challenges linked to oil production, including terminal illnesses, cancers, and workplace injuries.

“The bill enjoyed overwhelming support from stakeholders during the public hearing,” she said, emphasising that oil-producing communities and workers have long borne the health impacts of extractive operations.

According to her, the absence of occupational health facilities in the region has left both workers and residents exposed to avoidable health risks, fueling grievances and unrest in the Niger Delta.

“This neglect has been a catalyst for agitations and disruptions that undermine national development,” she added.

Delta State, she pointed out, remains one of the country’s highest oil producers, hosting several multinational firms and contractors.

“Siting this hospital in Benikrukru will bridge a critical gap in healthcare for one of Nigeria’s most industrialised but health‑burdened regions,” Senator Harry said.

The proposed hospital will offer 24‑hour emergency services, occupational health treatments, and specialised care for oil-related illnesses. It is also expected to reduce delays in patient evacuations and improve rapid medical response in remote communities.

“Passing this bill is about more than healthcare; it is about equity, justice, and national stability,” Harry declared, urging her colleagues to support the legislation.

Following a clause‑by‑clause review, the Senate unanimously passed the bill, which will now proceed to the House of Representatives for concurrence before being sent to the President for assent.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
