APC in Turmoil! Ex-Kaduna Local Government Chairman Dumps Ruling Party

A former chairman of Kaduna North Local Government Area, Mukhtar Lawal Baloni, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement personally signed and circulated to journalists, Baloni explained that he was leaving the ruling party because it had strayed from its founding ideals and lost touch with the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.

Baloni, who was instrumental in the early growth of the APC, said his decision stemmed from “a widening gap” between his personal values and the party’s current direction.

He recalled the optimism that surrounded the APC in its formative years but lamented that those days of inclusiveness and relevance had faded.

“The party we once knew offered a platform committed to meeting the needs of everyday Nigerians in a noble and qualitative manner,” he said.
“Sadly, those ideals have been eroded.”

Explaining his decision further, Baloni added:

“My resignation is a personal and painful decision, reached after deep reflection and discussions with stakeholders who share my view that the APC no longer represents the vision we once embraced.”

It was gathered that Baloni resigned alongside several of his close political allies. Those stepping down with him include former Vice Chairman of the local government (2012–2014) Dahiru Abdullahi Maidace, former Chief of Staff Ghali Mohammed Waziri, and several former advisers, councillors, and grassroots leaders who have long worked within the APC structure in Kaduna North.

He noted that their collective exit reflects growing discontent within the party’s ranks at the local level.

In his parting remarks, Baloni called for the rise of a new political movement anchored on justice, equity, and genuine service to the people.

“It is time to chart a new path—one that prioritizes people-centered governance and amplifies the voices of the voiceless. We need a platform that truly understands and serves the grassroots,” he declared.

Baloni’s resignation adds to the wave of defections rocking the APC in Kaduna State. The trend intensified following the exit of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently left the APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and is reportedly working to rally opposition figures, with speculations swirling about a possible alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a broader coalition platform.

APC Reacts

In response, Salisu Tanko Wusono, the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Kaduna State, downplayed the significance of Baloni’s exit, describing such realignments as normal in a democracy.

“Our focus in the APC is to strengthen our bond with the people of Kaduna State,” Wusono said. “We were elected on promises, and we are committed to fulfilling them.”

On Baloni’s decision, Wusono added:

“There’s no fault in someone feeling their personal opinion no longer aligns with that of the party or the people. If he chooses to leave, there’s little anyone can do.”

He stressed that the APC remains strong and continues to enjoy broad support across the state.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.
