South Africa coach Desiree Ellis has hailed her players’ mental fortitude after edging Senegal 4-1 on penalties to book a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi‑final clash with Nigeria’s Super Falcons

Saturday’s quarter‑final ended 0-0 after extra time, but Banyana Banyana held their nerve in the shootout, with goalkeeper Andile Dlamini making decisive saves to send the defending champions through.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

It was a historic moment for South Africa — their first‑ever penalty shootout victory at WAFCON — which Ellis described as unforgettable.

“I don’t have enough words to describe this team — the resilience, the courage, the never‑say‑die attitude, the willingness to fight for each other,” Ellis told Safa.net. “No matter what they threw at us, we were able to withstand that.”

While celebrating the milestone, Ellis admitted the performance was far from flawless. She highlighted careless turnovers and praised Senegal’s progress under their current coach.

“We handled their long balls well, but at times we gave the ball away too cheaply,” she noted. “Senegal have improved since we last met. Credit to their coach for that.”

Ellis revealed the team had rehearsed for a potential shootout — a decision that proved crucial.
“We’d been practising penalties. We knew our takers, and that’s why we made the changes we made,” she explained. “We also knew Andile could save one or two — she’s done it before.”

For Ellis, the triumph was also deeply personal, recalling heartbreak in the 2006 and 2018 WAFCON finals when South Africa lost on penalties.
“This was our first penalty shootout victory at WAFCON,” she said. “We’ve been here before and fallen short. This time, the story is different.”

Looking ahead to the semi‑final against nine‑time champions Nigeria, Ellis insisted the focus would come later.
“We’re not thinking about Nigeria right now,” she said. “We’ll start planning tomorrow. For now, we celebrate what we’ve achieved.”

South Africa have since relocated from Oujda to Casablanca, where they face the Super Falcons on Tuesday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium. Nigeria enter the match on the back of a commanding 5-0 win over Zambia

He made the statement during an interview on News Central, saying the decision followed internal consultations involving key figures such as the Julius Abure-led leadership and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

Arabambi further blamed Obi and his supporters for contributing to Labour Party’s internal challenges during the 2023 elections, alleging organizational failures during the polls.

Olaposi also claimed that only a minority of Kwankwasiya supporters followed Kwankwaso, insisting that many of them have since joined the APC.

He further accused Atiku of misinformation, stressing that NNPP remains an independent political party focused on contesting elections on its own platform.
