Vice-Chancellor Prof. Owunari Georgewill revealed this on Monday at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, held as part of activities marking the university’s 50th anniversary and combined convocation ceremony.

According to Georgewill, the week‑long event, scheduled for July 21 to July 26, will feature the conferment of degrees, higher degrees, diplomas, prizes, and other honours.

He explained that the convocation covers students who completed their programmes during the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic sessions. In total, 14,861 graduands will be celebrated.

A detailed breakdown shows that 9,788 undergraduates will receive first degrees, with 363 graduating with first-class honours. In the postgraduate category, 2,008 will earn Postgraduate Diplomas, 2,131 will receive Master’s degrees, and 934 will be conferred with PhDs.

The vice-chancellor also announced that four eminent Nigerians will be honoured with honorary doctorate degrees:

  • Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady of Nigeria,

  • Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,

  • Aminu Masari, Chairman of TETFund, and

  • Gov. Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State.

Georgewill described the convocation as a “season of harvest”—a time for the university to assess its achievements in infrastructure, academic programmes, global visibility, research collaborations, and future challenges.

He highlighted significant infrastructural progress made possible through Federal Government support, TETFund interventions, and capital projects, leading to renovated buildings, new office complexes, and improved learning environments.

UNIPORT, he said, now boasts state-of-the-art laboratories, a modern sports complex, upgraded health facilities, a counselling centre, an entrepreneurial hub, and a world-class Convocation Arena, all designed to produce well-rounded graduates.

In a major sustainability milestone, Georgewill announced the ongoing construction of a 10.7MW solar hybrid power plant in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency under the UNIPORT Solar Farm Project.

“When completed, this plant will provide stable electricity to the university, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, and surrounding communities,” he said.

As part of the university’s academic expansion, he revealed the establishment of three new faculties:

  • Faculty of Computing,

  • Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, and

  • Faculty of Media and Communications.

Georgewill also disclosed that over 1,000 students have been awarded scholarships through partnerships with 13 external sponsors.

He further noted that UNIPORT continues to attract international research grants and collaborations, leading to the creation of two World Bank–funded Africa Centres of Excellence (ACEs):

  • ACE for Public Health and Toxicological Research (ACE‑PUTOR) and

  • ACE for Oilfield Chemicals Research (ACE‑CEFOR).

“These centres are driving human capital development and world-class research with both regional and global impact,” he added.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has said that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is free to join the ruling party at any time he chooses.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Yilwatda made the statement on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja, stressing that membership of the APC is voluntary and not forced on anyone.

According to him, Wike remains at liberty to decide his political future, and there is no obligation for appointees to formally join the ruling party before serving in government.

“If he wants to join the APC, he is free. We don’t compel people to join; they do so willingly,” he said.

He added that cross-party appointments are not new in Nigeria’s political history, noting that past administrations also appointed members of opposition parties into key positions.

Yilwatda cited examples such as Bala Mohammed and Adamu Aliero, who served as ministers under PDP governments despite being affiliated with other parties at the time.

He questioned the criticism directed at President Bola Tinubu over Wike’s appointment, arguing that similar decisions were taken by previous administrations without controversy.

The APC chairman also pointed to other non-APC members serving in the current government, saying Wike should not be singled out.

He further stated that Wike obtained approval from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before accepting the ministerial appointment in 2023.

Yilwatda maintained that President Tinubu has continued to demonstrate openness by appointing individuals across party lines based on competence.
