The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on Nigerians to seize the opportunity offered by the ongoing constitution review process to demand greater accountability and transparency from the 10th National Assembly.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Saturday during the Constitution Review Public Hearing in Owerri—the centre hosting submissions from Imo and Abia States—Kalu underscored the critical role of citizens in shaping the country’s constitutional future.

The public hearing forms part of nationwide efforts to review and amend the 1999 Constitution, allowing stakeholders and ordinary citizens alike to submit ideas, petitions, and proposals that will help reposition Nigeria.

Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, reminded participants that constitutional reform is an ongoing process rather than a one‑off event, stressing the need for sustained public engagement to ensure that adopted reforms are faithfully implemented.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu said:

“I urge you to hold us accountable. Ask the tough questions. Demand transparency. Insist on fairness. The future of our democracy depends on it.

Today, I make a heartfelt appeal to every son and daughter of Abia and Imo: this is your Constitution, your moment. You are not just observers—you are stakeholders and co‑authors of Nigeria’s next chapter. Do not hold back your ideas, your criticisms, or your aspirations.”

He emphasized that every memorandum, petition, and passionate submission would help shape the amendments that will go before the National Assembly, the President, and ultimately the Nigerian people:

“The strength of our democracy lies not in lawmakers’ pronouncements alone, but in the active participation of the people. Let us produce not just a legal document, but a social contract that reflects the hopes and values of all Nigerians.”

Kalu reminded attendees that the review process involves several stages—debates in plenary, harmonisation with the Senate, and eventual transmission to State Houses of Assembly—urging them to remain vigilant and engaged to ensure the final outcome truly serves the people.

“Nigeria’s greatness lies in its ability to have difficult conversations, to listen, to debate, and to find common ground,” he said.
“To the people of Abia and Imo: your ideas matter. Your voices matter. Your future matters. Let us rise above division, embrace our shared destiny, and build a Nigeria where justice, equity, and progress are not just ideals, but everyday realities.”

He revealed that the committee is currently considering 87 prioritised amendment bills, each addressing critical national issues, and encouraged the people of Abia and Imo to make meaningful contributions, particularly on matters that affect them directly.

Kalu also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support in driving constitutional reform and strengthening Nigeria’s institutions:

“I must acknowledge the visionary leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR. Under his stewardship, Nigeria has embraced a reform‑heavy agenda—one that recognises the urgent need for constitutional renewal, institutional strengthening, and inclusive growth. His commitment to the rule of law and his respect for the legislature’s constitutional role have created an enabling environment for this historic review. We are grateful for his support and leadership.”

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has openly backed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred governorship candidate under the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sule made this known during a meeting with political appointees at the Government House in Lafia, a move seen as an early signal of political succession plans in the state.

Wadada, who currently represents Nasarawa West in the 10th Senate, recently dumped the Social Democratic Party for the APC, further fuelling speculations about his governorship ambition.

The governor also faulted public officials who parade routine duties like salary payments, road construction and provision of basic amenities as landmark achievements.

Speaking on Wednesday at the 59th inaugural lecture of Nasarawa State University, Sule said governance should go beyond basic responsibilities and focus on policies that directly improve people’s lives.

According to him, leaders must think beyond conventional projects and pursue solutions that bring lasting impact to citizens.

Using his administration as an example, Sule recalled how frequent fire outbreaks at a major market used to force the government into repeated relief payouts to traders.

He said rather than continuing temporary interventions, his government chose to build a modern market to permanently tackle the problem, adding that there has been no report of another fire incident since the reconstruction.

Sule also highlighted the construction of a bridge in Auta near Keffi, which he said has greatly reduced years of devastating flooding in the area.

At the event, Ike Neliaku praised Sule’s development strides, especially road and infrastructure projects across key parts of the state.

Also speaking, Emmanuel Dandaura stressed the need for institutions to align communication with performance, warning that failure to do so could erode public trust.
