Diplomatic Tension: FG Slams Ankara’s Allegation of Emerging Terror Network

The Federal Government has dismissed claims that a new terrorist group is operating in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This followed a warning from the Turkish government alleging that members of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) are active in Nigeria and several other countries.

Turkey’s Ambassador‑designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, made the allegation on Tuesday night in Abuja during a dinner hosted by the Turkish Embassy to commemorate the country’s Democracy and National Unity Day.

Poroy asserted that the group, which he said hides under the guise of running schools and healthcare services, poses a security threat wherever it operates.

“Unfortunately, the FETO terrorist organisation still maintains its activities in Nigeria, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.
We consistently brief our Nigerian friends on the nature and dangers of this organisation and urge them to remain vigilant,” Poroy said.

However, in a reaction published by The PUNCH, the Coordinator of the National Counter‑Terrorism Centre, Maj. Gen. Adamu Laka, urged citizens not to panic, insisting there is no new terrorist group within Nigeria’s borders.

“There is no new terrorist group in Nigeria. There’s no need to panic,” Laka said.

FETO is linked to the late Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, who died in 2024 at the age of 83. Once an ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Gulen was later accused of masterminding a failed 2016 coup in Turkey. He was convicted in absentia and declared a terrorist by the Erdogan administration, despite his repeated denials.

Although Gulen’s network of schools and charities operates in over 160 countries, including Nigeria, there is no public evidence or official confirmation that these institutions have been involved in terrorist activities on Nigerian soil.

He made the statement during an interview on News Central, saying the decision followed internal consultations involving key figures such as the Julius Abure-led leadership and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

According to him, the party has also resolved to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Arabambi further blamed Obi and his supporters for contributing to Labour Party’s internal challenges during the 2023 elections, alleging organizational failures during the polls.

In a statement on Thursday, NNPP National Secretary Ogini Olaposi said the party is not affiliated with the ADC and has no plans to join or merge with the coalition.

He clarified that the involvement of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and members of the Kwankwasiya Movement in ADC activities does not represent the NNPP as a political party.

Olaposi also claimed that only a minority of Kwankwasiya supporters followed Kwankwaso, insisting that many of them have since joined the APC.

He further accused Atiku of misinformation, stressing that NNPP remains an independent political party focused on contesting elections on its own platform.

According to him, any previous association with the Kwankwasiya Movement ended after the 2023 general elections, adding that Kwankwaso and some associates had already been expelled from the party.

The NNPP maintained that it respects other political parties but has no interest in joining the ADC coalition.
