2027 Political Earthquake Looms as Buhari’s CPC Camp Threatens APC Loyalty
The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari has rekindled speculation about the political future of his loyalists, particularly those who once belonged to the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the party he founded in 2009.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023, the influence of CPC stalwarts has steadily diminished. Some of Buhari’s closest allies—such as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai and ex‑Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal—have openly voiced their opposition to Tinubu’s rumored bid for a second term.
With Buhari’s passing, analysts predict that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could face renewed turbulence from the late leader’s vast, cult‑like following, long estimated at over 12 million people.
Tensions are already surfacing between the APC and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as both parties jostle to win over Buhari’s political base. This shift follows recent comments by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who remarked that Buhari’s death would inevitably reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
“That shows the magnitude of what has befallen Nigeria,” Abdulsalami observed. “With the passing of Buhari, politics in Nigeria will certainly change—I hope for the better.”
In an interview with The PUNCH, ADC interim National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi revealed that many of Buhari’s loyalists had already joined their coalition.
“Most of the Buhari loyalists are already with us,” Abdullahi said. “The majority of them, the entire North is already with our party. We are very confident. The passing of the former President will only cement that for us, because that was his wish when he was alive—that his members should join the coalition.”
He added, “As you can see, there is strong representation of CPC and Buhari loyalists in our senior ranks—Babachir Lawal, Abubakar Malami, Isah Pantami, Emeka Nwajuba, Nasir El‑Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and others. Those are Buhari’s people, and their presence shows where he stood.”
Abdullahi further argued that the APC alienated Buhari’s allies even while he was alive.
“Why would they remain part of the APC?” he asked. “Is it because they enjoy the humiliation and exclusion they’ve suffered? Or because they’ve watched the government demonise Buhari’s legacy while he was alive?”
He accused the Tinubu administration of repeatedly blaming Buhari for Nigeria’s economic woes:
“President Tinubu’s government has blamed Buhari for almost every economic woe. So, why would his followers remain in the APC?”
Meanwhile, several prominent figures from the old CPC remain within the APC, including former Nasarawa Governor Senator Tanko Al‑Makura; Babale Ila; Ibrahim Gobir; Senator Ibrahim Musa; Sanusi Aliyu; Mohammed Tukur; Senator Ahmed Sani; Ibrahim Chachangi; Yusuf Bala; and APC North‑West National Vice Chairman Garuba Datti.
Others still in the ruling party include Katsina Governor Dikko Radda; RMAFC Chairman M.B. Shehu; NDLEA Chairman, retired General Buba Marwa; former House Speaker Aminu Bello Masari; Adamu Farouk; Okoi Obono‑Obla; ex‑VON DG Osita Okechukwu; Senator Ibrahim Musa; and Nasiru Argungu.
Also on the list are former Katsina Governor Aminu Masari, Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule, Adamu Adamu, Senator Mustafa Salihu, Almajiri Geidam, Waziri Bulama, Dr. Nasiru Argungu, Dr. Dominic Alancha, Ayuba Balami, Lucy Ajayi, Captain Bala Jibrin, Uche Ufearoh, Yusuf Salih, and Alkali Ajikolo.
However, party insiders told The PUNCH that while many of these figures are actively working for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, some aggrieved members—particularly those who feel sidelined since Buhari left office—may ultimately defect.
Salihu Lukman, former APC National Vice Chairman (North‑West) and now a member of the ADC coalition, described Buhari’s death as the end of an era when his endorsement almost guaranteed electoral victory.
Speaking on Arise TV, Lukman said:
“What we must learn, especially in the coalition, is that we no longer have someone with Buhari’s intimidating political profile. Our leaders must embrace team spirit. It’s not just about defeating APC and Tinubu—it’s about creating a new, fresh political template that meets Nigerians’ expectations.”
He urged politicians to show humility and reconnect with citizens:
“I know many politicians relied on him to raise their hands and endorse them, which often meant instant victory in many parts of the North. Now we have no figure like that. Politicians must relate to citizens with greater humility rather than the current arrogance.”

Makinde made the declaration on Thursday during the APM South-West town hall meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
He expressed confidence that the party would secure a sweeping victory in the 2027 polls, describing its agenda as a plan to reset the country.
Makinde made the prediction after Mohammed was introduced at the gathering and described as an incoming senator.
Speaking at the event, the APM presidential candidate said, “Well, APM is going to win this election overwhelmingly because this is the reset agenda being put before Nigerians, so I dare to say that my national leader is the incoming Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
He urged Nigerians to listen to the party’s message and support its proposed agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.
Makinde also discussed the qualities he believes Nigerians should consider when choosing their next president, arguing that physical energy and the ability to tackle national challenges should take precedence over age.
According to him, the next president must possess the stamina to work long hours and respond effectively to the country’s pressing problems.
He stated, “While I will not make age an issue in this campaign, I will make energy, having energy, being able to stay up late to deal with the challenges we face as a country.”
Makinde further challenged presidential candidates to demonstrate their physical fitness, urging voters to consider their capacity to handle the demands of the presidency.
“So please, when they bring their presidential candidates, let the candidates be able to jump, and if they can do that, vote for them,” he added.
