The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on party members and residents of the state to ignore what it described as the antics of individuals falsely parading themselves as members of the party’s Caretaker Committee in Edo.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This position was made public on Tuesday during the screening of aspirants for the Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency by‑elections, scheduled for August 16, 2025, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill two vacant National Assembly seats.

The Screening Committee, appointed by the PDP National Working Committee, is chaired by Prof. Okumoko Tubo Pearce with Arc. Chinomso Odoemelan as Secretary. Other members include Inemo Dede, Evelyn Promise, and David Omare.

Those screened for the Edo Central Senatorial District ticket are John Yakubu, Friday Itulah, Joseph Okojie, and Festus Edogun, while Johnny Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi was the sole aspirant for the Ovia Federal Constituency seat.

Speaking at the exercise held at the PDP secretariat, 20 Aiguobasimwin Street, GRA, Benin City, the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, assured members that the process would be fair and credible, expressing confidence that the party would win the by‑elections.

According to him:

“The national headquarters of the PDP is the only body empowered to conduct congresses and primaries. They have sent this five-man team from Abuja to screen aspirants for the Edo Central and Ovia by‑elections. Even those who bought forms in Abuja are here for screening, proving beyond doubt that this is the authentic Caretaker Committee and the only recognised PDP secretariat in Edo State.”

Festus Edogun hailed the screening as transparent and credible, expressing optimism that, with the backing of his constituents, he would clinch the ticket and win the poll.

John Yakubu also praised the committee for a fair process, noting that Edo Central has always been a PDP stronghold and that the by‑election offers an opportunity for the party to reclaim the district.

Joseph Okojie commended the professionalism of the panel and voiced confidence in the party’s victory.

Friday Itulah echoed similar sentiments, stressing that widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling APC government over poverty, insecurity, and hardship would work in the PDP’s favour.

For the Ovia Federal Constituency, Johnny Aikpitanyi described the screening as seamless and pledged to prioritise grassroots development if elected, declaring:

Olaposi also claimed that only a minority of Kwankwasiya supporters followed Kwankwaso, insisting that many of them have since joined the APC.

He further accused Atiku of misinformation, stressing that NNPP remains an independent political party focused on contesting elections on its own platform.

Momodu had argued that a pairing of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could perform strongly in the election, citing their past collaboration in 2019 and Obi’s 2023 electoral performance.

Responding, Tanko questioned the logic of choosing a candidate who might win a primary but lose the general election, insisting that the Obi–Kwankwaso combination would be more formidable.

He further warned that if the ADC fails to zone its presidential ticket to the South, the party risks losing the 2027 election.

Tanko maintained that with Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso on the same ticket, victory would be decisive and swift.
