Exclusive! Why Buhari’s Coffin Was Kept in Passenger Cabin Instead of Cargo Compartment
The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari were flown back to Nigeria in the main cabin of a Nigerian Air Force jet, deviating from the usual practice of placing caskets in an aircraft’s cargo hold.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Punch, the decision was taken because the casket could not fit into the aircraft’s cargo compartment.
Instead of opting for a body bag that would fit into the hold, officials decided to transport the casket in the cabin. To make this possible, the front seats of the aircraft were folded down and tables unfolded to create a flat, bed-like platform on which the casket could be respectfully secured.
A source told the publication:
“You would have noticed that the remains of the former President were not placed in the cargo hold, as is standard practice, but in the main cabin.
The corpse arrived in a casket draped with the Nigerian flag. However, it could not fit into the aircraft’s hold, which isn’t designed for such items, and the British airport authorities insisted on safety protocols.
To avoid using a body bag, considerable time was spent preparing and wrapping the remains in the national flag. The front seats were then collapsed, and tables unfolded to create a proper bed-like space for the casket to be tied down.”
As a final mark of honour, nine senior military officers served as pallbearers, carefully placing the flag‑draped casket on a trolley before it was moved for the flight home.
