His death has triggered a nationwide outpouring of tributes and a flurry of state‑coordinated preparations for his interment in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
Buhari, who first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 before returning as an elected president between 2015 and 2023, remains one of the few leaders in the country’s history to have governed in both military and civilian eras.
In recognition of his legacy, the Federal Government has declared a public holiday and set up a high‑level inter‑ministerial committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to work with the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family on the burial arrangements.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also dispatched a delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to London to accompany the late leader’s remains back home. Other members of the delegation include Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and Deputy Chief of Staff Senator Ibrahim Hadejia.
According to the presidency, Tinubu will personally receive Buhari’s body at the Katsina airport, after which it will be moved to Daura for Islamic funeral rites and burial.
Buhari’s Body Departs London on NAF Aircraft
By 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Buhari’s remains had already departed London aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, with his final resting place prepared at his private residence in Daura.
Confirming the development, presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said:
“The body left London by 7:48 a.m. and is expected after seven hours. The graveyard is being dug.”
Tight security has since been mounted around Buhari’s Daura residence. Officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Army are stationed at the entrance, while personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed to strategic locations in and around the premises.
