IBB Remembers Buhari: ‘A Leader Driven by Conviction, Not Convenience’
Former military ruler, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has mourned the death of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a man of principle, unwavering sincerity, and deep patriotism.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a personal statement released on Monday, IBB expressed profound sorrow over the passing of a man he referred to not just as a colleague but as a brother in service and in purpose. He recalled their first encounter in 1962 when both joined the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna, a moment that marked the beginning of a bond that spanned over six decades.
“From the start, Muhammadu distinguished himself—calm but firm, principled yet modest, and always loyal to the Nigerian cause,” Babangida wrote. “Our relationship evolved far beyond military brotherhood. We were united by duty, discipline, and a mutual dream for a better Nigeria.”
While acknowledging occasional disagreements between them, IBB affirmed that Buhari’s dedication to Nigeria was never in doubt.
“Yes, we didn’t always see eye to eye, as is normal in any close relationship. But one thing was certain—his sincerity, his patriotism, and his love for Nigeria were never in question.”
Reflecting on their separate leadership journeys, Babangida noted that destiny had positioned both of them at Nigeria’s helm during challenging times, yet Buhari remained steadfast in his core values.
“Throughout his career, and especially in leadership, he championed integrity, order, and public service rooted in humility.”
He described Buhari’s death as more than a personal loss—it marked the departure of a symbol of Nigeria’s political evolution.
“His passing is not just about losing a former Head of State or two-term civilian President. It represents the close of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s journey—from military rule to democratic stability.”
Babangida also highlighted Buhari’s continued relevance even after retirement, citing his moral influence and austere lifestyle as examples for leaders to emulate.
“Even in retirement, he remained a moral compass—revered for his simplicity, integrity, and devotion to national service.”
Offering his condolences to the late president’s wife, Aisha Buhari, his children and grandchildren, IBB prayed:
“May Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, reward his good deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”
Buhari, who first led Nigeria as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later returned as an elected civilian president from 2015 to 2023, passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82, after battling an undisclosed illness.
