Speaking at the grand finale of the ‘Renewed Hope International Horse Racing Derby’ in Kaduna on Saturday, the president emphasized the importance of institutionalizing the sport within the broader national development agenda.
According to NIVONEWS, President Tinubu declared that his government is “fully committed to general sports development in the country,” and pledged to partner with relevant stakeholders to take horse racing to its rightful place as both a cultural symbol and economic driver. He further noted that horse racing, with its deep roots in Nigerian tradition, aligns strongly with the core values of his Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This sport promotes unity, enhances our rich cultural transitions, boosts tourism, and strengthens our economy,” Tinubu said, reiterating that horse racing has the potential to serve as a bridge between diverse communities across Africa.
Also speaking at the event, the Life President of the International Horse Racing Federation and Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, praised the historic significance of the gathering. According to NIVONEWS, the monarch emphasized that the Sahel Savannah racing series represents a concrete expression of the president’s vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria.
“The event showcases the competitive spirit, diversity, and rich traditions that define our nation,” he said, highlighting how the races are becoming a symbol of Nigeria’s soft power across the region.
Chairman of the federation, Alhaji Tajudeen Dantata, described the derby as a landmark achievement for the country’s horse racing ecosystem. He stated that the federation remains focused on harnessing and developing talent while spotlighting the potential of horse racing to become a mainstream national sport.
The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, who serves as grand patron of the federation, added that the sport holds immense potential to unify people across ethnic and national boundaries. According to NIVONEWS, the Emir observed the celebratory atmosphere in Kaduna as evidence of the power of horse racing to foster harmony and peaceful coexistence.
Meanwhile, the National Coordinator of the event, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha-Bida, revealed that five African countries—Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali—participated in this year’s edition, stressing that Nigeria’s international horse racing circuit is steadily expanding through such regional collaborations.
