Peter Obi Clears The Air: “I Served Food Because I Live Without A House Help”
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has addressed the widespread reactions trailing viral videos and photos of him personally serving food at a public event.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to NIVONEWS, Obi clarified that the gesture was not a publicity stunt, but a demonstration of servant leadership and empathy, core values he believes should define leadership in Nigeria.
In a statement personally signed on Sunday, Obi explained that the event in question was the Jubilee of Hope, a private initiative aimed at encouraging the wealthy to step out of their comfort zones and serve the less privileged. He emphasized that it was not organized for political optics, contrary to claims by critics who have framed the moment as a ploy for the 2027 elections. According to NIVONEWS, Obi stated that third parties, unconnected to his media team, circulated the footage, twisting a genuine act of service into a political narrative.
“The Jubilee of Hope is designed for the rich to come down from their high places and serve the poor—not as a performance, but as a reflection of the equitable society we must build,” Obi wrote. “That day, I wasn’t alone. Other respected Nigerians like Cardinal Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, and former Seplat Chairman Dr. A.B.C. Orjiako also quietly participated.”
He further explained that service has always been an integral part of his lifestyle, stating, “Even as Governor, I often served at events. Today, I do not have a house help. I sweep, clean, and personally serve visitors in my home. For me, humility is not a political tactic; it is a way of life.”
According to NIVONEWS, Obi also revealed that he extended his stay at the event upon the request of several poor attendees who asked to be served directly by him. “There was nothing special about what I did. Service should not be an exception—it should be the standard,” he said.
He concluded with a call to action: “We cannot speak of building a New Nigeria while ignoring the poor and hungry. Hope must not be seasonal, and dignity should be a right, not a privilege.”
