Political Shockwaves: Diri’s Spokesman Hints at Governor’s Autonomy on Tinubu Support

Speaking to Premium Times, Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, asserted that the governor will not be pressured into making political declarations that may not reflect the best interest of Bayelsa State or its people.

“At the appropriate time, if the governor chooses to support the president, he will make that known,” Alabrah said. “He is a courageous leader and will speak when he deems it right.”

According to him, Governor Diri will act solely based on what aligns with the interest and welfare of Bayelsans, not external pressure.

“No one can compel him to speak before he considers it necessary. He will only take a public stance when it serves the greater good of the state,” Alabrah added.

His comments follow recent remarks by George Turnah, a former aide to Diri and now a vocal critic, who demanded that the governor declare his support—or lack thereof—for Tinubu’s second-term bid.

Turnah, who recently switched allegiance from Diri’s camp to that of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has been actively mobilizing support for Tinubu in the South-South. Now serving as the PDP South-South Zonal Secretary, Turnah criticized Diri’s silence at a pro-Wike rally organized by his group, The NEW Associates, in April.

Despite Diri’s disapproval of the rally and concerns over dragging Rivers State’s political turmoil into Bayelsa, Turnah and his supporters went ahead with the event, escalating political tension in the state.

At the rally, Turnah claimed Governor Diri had benefited more than any other South-South governor from President Tinubu’s administration but had shown no gratitude.

In response, Alabrah dismissed Turnah’s assertions, challenging him to clarify what “magnanimity” he was referring to.
