Billions on the Run? Nigeria Targets Cash Mules with Tougher Airport Checks
According to NIVONEWS, security agencies operating at airports across Nigeria have adopted a series of new protocols aimed at tightening passenger check-in, screening, and other travel-related procedures to curb rising incidents of money laundering and illicit financial flows.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This renewed effort includes plans to harmonise the use of advanced technology and reduce the number of screening points for both inbound and outbound travellers.
As part of the strategy, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have reached a consensus on streamlining airport clearing processes. This includes the deployment of multiple viewing platforms for officers stationed at both departure and arrival terminals of international airports, a move designed to deter illegal financial transactions. According to NIVONEWS, the new security framework became imperative as Nigeria intensifies efforts to delist itself from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List of jurisdictions under increased monitoring.
Speaking after a facility tour of the Lagos International Airport on Thursday, FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, emphasised that the collaboration with NCS is pivotal to addressing key Anti-Money Laundering (AML) deficiencies identified by FATF. She explained that inter-agency synergy, especially in terms of intelligence sharing and protocol alignment, will help plug existing loopholes in airport security.
Kuku also highlighted that both FAAN and NCS have agreed on deploying critical technologies and infrastructure aimed at improving the overall passenger experience while tightening oversight. She said: “With this level of collaboration, we are optimistic that passenger facilitation will improve significantly and trade will benefit. More importantly, this positions Nigeria to exit the FATF Grey List.”
According to NIVONEWS, Mrs. Kuku further stated that efforts were being made to eliminate duplication of roles among security agencies, share advanced passenger information, and streamline procedures to strengthen national security at all airports.
On his part, Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, praised FAAN for driving such collaborative reforms. He stressed the need to limit the number of non-essential personnel around sensitive airport zones to enhance effective profiling of passengers. “Reducing human traffic around key checkpoints will significantly aid our ability to monitor and prevent illicit activities,” he noted.
Mr. Adeniyi added that the Customs Service is fully committed to working with other agencies to integrate technologies that will not only support security and reduce financial crimes but also expand cargo exports and increase government revenue.
