Bandit Kingpin Bello Turji Defies Military Threat — Still Roaming Free!

Published

on

It has now been 10 months since Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, vowed that the military under his leadership would capture or eliminate the notorious bandit kingpin, Bello Turji, and bring an end to his reign of terror. During a press conference in Abuja on September 10, 2024, General Musa had boldly declared that Turji — whom he labelled a “deranged terrorist” — would soon meet his end.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NIVONEWS, Musa assured Nigerians that Turji’s days were numbered, saying: “It is just a matter of time. We’re going to get him, and I can assure you that it will be within the shortest possible time.” At another public event, he reiterated the pledge and said the military would dismantle the extortion system through which bandits like Turji collect levies from helpless citizens, describing it as a sign of their desperation.

However, nearly a year later, that promise remains unfulfilled. According to NIVONEWS, not only has Turji evaded capture, he has grown more emboldened. He continues to unleash violence in Zamfara and Sokoto States, controlling territories and releasing taunting videos that ridicule the military’s efforts. In one such clip, Turji — clad in military camouflage and wielding assault rifles — directly challenged CDS Musa by name, daring him to “bring all the weapons” and confront him in battle.

In other chilling footage, the bandit leader displayed kidnapped victims and demanded a N50 million ransom, warning authorities against testing his resolve. According to NIVONEWS, Turji has now shifted tactics and is quietly proposing peace talks — a move security analysts believe could be a ploy to ease the mounting pressure while strategising his next move.

While some of his foot soldiers, including his son and cousin, have been neutralised, Turji himself continues to slip through the cracks, fueling suspicion that he may have moles within the nation’s security infrastructure.

Recently, Sokoto State’s Security Adviser, Col. Ahmed Usman (retd), urged Turji to demonstrate sincerity by halting attacks and releasing hostages before any peace negotiations can be considered. Turji’s latest overtures followed the killing of his cousin and loyal fighter, Yellow Danbokolo, by Shinkafi Volunteer Forces in Zamfara.

Despite multiple videos and a trail of bloodshed, the military has yet to capture or kill Turji — a development that has left many Nigerians disillusioned with CDS Musa’s high-profile pledge. Whether this failure is due to operational lapses, internal compromise, or a deliberate soft approach, one thing is clear: the clock is ticking, and the blood of innocent Nigerians continues to be shed while Turji remains a free man.
