Ijaw Chiefs Unite to End Okomo Standoff, Inaugurate Conflict Resolution Team

The committee, inaugurated in June, emerged from a meeting of royal fathers from riverside Ijaw communities across Ondo, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa States. At the meeting, the monarchs unanimously agreed that all warring factions must lay down their arms and embrace dialogue for peace.
Among the royal fathers who endorsed the initiative were HRM William Ogoba (Pere of Gbaramatu), HRM Zacheus Egbunu (Pere of Arogbo), HRM Joel Ibane (Pere of Iduwini), HRM Capt. King Frank Okiakpe (Pere of Gbaraun), and HRM Stephen Oyabebefa Ebikeme (Pere of Poromor).
Other monarchs included HRM Godwin Ogunoyibo (Pere of Olodiama), HRM Gbebokedi Ajiroba (Pere of Tubutoru), and HRM Roman Ikiyouseigha (Pere of Furupagha).
Speaking with South South Punch on Tuesday, the committee chairman, Chief Sunday Ajele, attributed the crisis to deep internal divisions in Okomu, worsened by political interference from the previous Edo State government. He revealed that the conflict intensified following the actions of a former militant leader, Lawrence, who ignored multiple appeals from traditional authorities to disarm.
“This conflict has persisted for more than three years. While the Ijaw National Congress and other respected leaders attempted to mediate, their efforts were ultimately frustrated,” Ajele lamented.
He noted that tensions escalated after Lawrence’s base was raided by security forces and vigilantes, resulting in the destruction of property and the deaths of several of his associates. In retaliation, Lawrence allegedly targeted individuals believed to have tipped off the authorities.
“Security agents are now hesitant to operate in the riverine zones,” Ajele said. “Lawrence fled after the initial operation but later returned to launch reprisal attacks.”
Ajele emphasized that the committee’s mandate is to unify the fragmented community and collaborate with security agencies to restore calm.
“Our goal is to bring all factions under one umbrella and foster reconciliation. We will work closely with the authorities to sanitize the affected riverine areas,” he said.
He also accused the previous Edo State administration of fanning the flames through a divide-and-rule strategy that allegedly supported one faction for political leverage.
The crisis has devastated Okomu and nearby Ijaw communities such as Agbede, Winke, Oweike, and Okorodudu. Over 74 homes have been destroyed—more than 30 in Agbede, 18 in Winke, and six in Okorodudu—leaving residents displaced and traumatized.
