Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Omokri argued that President Bola Tinubu has begun to dismantle what he described as an economic illusion maintained during Buhari’s tenure, steering the country toward a more realistic and sustainable economic path.
“We were living in a fool’s paradise. Tinubu has taken that away, and now we are living within our means,” Omokri said. “Should we keep accumulating debt just to give people an artificial sense of comfort? Under Buhari, we were borrowing excessively.”
He alleged that former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, who is currently on trial, secured ₦28 trillion in loans without the knowledge or approval of the National Assembly. Omokri said these funds were used to artificially prop up the value of the naira.
“We can’t keep borrowing just to feed people. We must shift to production—and that’s what is happening now. Exports are increasing, and imports are going down,” he added.
Responding to concerns about rising hardship and the declining purchasing power of the average Nigerian, Omokri acknowledged the pain but stressed that the transition away from debt-fueled spending was necessary.
“People feel things are worse, but the reality is that we must now look inward. Everything Tinubu is doing now—removing subsidies, unifying exchange rates—were policies also advocated by Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar,” he noted.
Commenting on Nigeria’s debt profile, Omokri claimed that Tinubu’s administration has already reduced the country’s debt burden.
“As of 2015, Nigeria’s debt was $63 billion. By the time Buhari left office, it had ballooned to $113 billion. Today, under President Tinubu, the debt has dropped to $97 billion—a reduction of over $14 billion. That deserves some recognition,” Omokri concluded.
