Bloodbath in Anambra-Edo Border Clash: 4 Dead, Schools Shut Down

In Anambra, three people lost their lives during a violent clash between security operatives and armed hoodlums in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area, and nearby Oko town in Orumba North. The unrest reportedly stemmed from resistance by local traders over a directive to vacate areas around the newly constructed Ekwulobia flyover. Armed men stormed the site early Wednesday, opening fire indiscriminately. In the chaos, two innocent civilians were fatally shot, while one of the attackers was gunned down in a shootout with a joint security task force. A vigilance group’s operational vehicle was also set ablaze.
Police spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, explaining that officers engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle under the flyover. He said the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has since deployed additional forces and ramped up security in the affected communities. According to NIVONEWS, the police have recovered several vehicles linked to the attack and are now in hot pursuit of the fleeing criminals.
Meanwhile, tragedy also struck in Edo State, where a 12-year-old pupil, Nathan Paul Spencer, drowned in a gutter during a heavy downpour while on his way to write the First School Leaving Certificate Examination. Investigations revealed that the school, without parental consent, had registered Nathan to sit for the exam at a different location far from his home. The state government has since revoked the licenses of the two private schools involved and arrested the head of one of them.
Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, who visited the bereaved family, said the state was appalled by the negligence that led to the young boy’s death. He also revealed that two other private schools may be shut down for allegedly collecting illegal fees from over 200 students and diverting payments. “This is not just gross mismanagement but a violation of children’s right to safety and dignity,” Iyamu said.
According to NIVONEWS, the Edo State government has vowed to ensure full accountability, warning school operators against exploiting parents or endangering pupils under the guise of education.
