Bandit Plot Collapses as Nigerian Army Launches Devastating Counterstrike

The attempted invasion, which occurred on Wednesday, was met with a swift and decisive military response. In a fierce gun battle that raged for several hours, the soldiers outgunned the attackers, forcing them into a chaotic retreat. Eyewitnesses described the town as a war zone, but praised the army’s superior firepower and tactical edge in turning the tide.
Military sources confirmed that numerous bandits were neutralised, while several others fled with gunshot wounds, abandoning weapons and ammunition in their haste. Security forces have since secured the town and restored calm.
The Director of Security at the Kebbi State Cabinet Office, AbdulRahman Zagga, lauded the troops’ bravery and discipline.
“Our soldiers showed exceptional courage. Their rapid response and combat precision turned what could have been a catastrophe into a resounding success,” he said.
Zagga also commended the Nigerian Air Force for its crucial aerial support during the encounter, noting that airstrikes inflicted significant casualties on retreating bandits and disrupted their escape.
“The situation is firmly under control. Thanks to the seamless coordination between our security agencies, Ribah residents can now feel safe again,” he added.
Preliminary intelligence links the attackers to the same criminal network behind recent assaults in Niger State, suggesting a broader strategy to expand their terror campaign into Kebbi—an effort that was decisively crushed.
In a separate incident, troops from Dukku Barracks foiled another bandit attack in Mera, Augie LGA. The group, identified as Lakurawa bandits, attempted to rustle cattle but were repelled by soldiers who forced them to flee empty-handed.
Reacting to the twin victories, Governor Nasir Idris praised the gallantry of the military and reiterated his administration’s commitment to bolstering security across the state.
“These successful operations prove that, with sustained support and synergy, our security forces can dismantle bandit networks and restore lasting peace,” the governor said.
Just days earlier, a combined security team had rescued six kidnapped victims and recovered stolen livestock during another operation in the Danko Wasagu area—further evidence of the growing momentum in the fight against insecurity.
Grateful residents of Ribah and Mera have expressed relief and called on the authorities to sustain the offensive and prevent a resurgence of violence.
