We’ve Been Cheated!’ – Community Blasts Oil Giant Over Failed Agreement

The Umuokoroka kindred of Asa community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State has accused WaltersmithPetroman Oil Limited of violating a land lease agreement and excluding key stakeholders from crucial decisions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The community raised the alarm over what it described as a deliberate breach of the “Freedom to Operate” (FTO) and Job Order agreement, protesting their exclusion from the signing process.

Speaking to journalists in Owerri on Monday, a respected elder of Umuigwe kindred and prominent community leader, Chief Celestine Azuoma Orji, recounted how the community originally reached an agreement with the oil firm to lease ancestral land for oil exploration. He, however, expressed disappointment that the company allegedly turned around and manipulated the process to suggest that landowners had sold their land.

According to Orji, WaltersmithPetroman, through its Community Relations Manager, allegedly colluded with some Town Union officials to bypass the rightful landowners during the signing of the FTO and Job Order.

“The company, in collaboration with certain Town Union members, signed the Freedom to Operate and proceeded to commence rigging activities on the site without the knowledge or involvement of the actual landowners,” he lamented. “It is unacceptable that Umuigwe and Umuodu kindreds, which make up Umuokoroka, were sidelined from such a process that holds significant job and economic benefits.”

He alleged that a select few Town Union leaders cornered the lucrative aspects of the deal while leaving the larger community and original landowners with nothing.

“We are calling on the government to urgently intervene and halt the ongoing process until all issues are resolved and all rightful stakeholders are fully included,” he added.

Also speaking through a representative, Joel Emezuo, another community leader from Umuodu, Chief David Ogbuanu, appealed to Governor Hope Uzodimma to step in and suspend rig operations until the principal landowners are part of the agreement and can access the details of the Job Order.

“The Job Order defines the legitimate landowners. We cannot be sidelined by a few elements within the Town Union. We urge our compassionate Governor to act swiftly and remove those sabotaging our collective interest,” he said.

Efforts to reach Waltersmith’s Community Relations Manager were unsuccessful as calls, text messages, and WhatsApp messages went unanswered as of press time.

The legal firm Ogbeide Associates, representing a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, requesting a formal investigation into PDP secretary Samuel Anyanwu and factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Key aspects of the petition include:

  • Allegations of False Representation: The petition challenges a November 3, 2025, letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which falsely claimed that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had replaced acting national chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum with Mohammed.

  • Contradictory NWC Records: Petitioners assert that the NWC’s November 1, 2025, emergency meeting actually resulted in the suspension of Anyanwu and three other officers due to alleged anti-party activities, and no record exists to support the claim that Damagum was suspended or Mohammed appointed.

  • Legal Precedents: The lawyers referenced an October 10, 2024, Federal High Court judgment that recognizes Damagum as the acting national chairman and prohibits INEC from accepting documents without his signature. Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.

  • Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.

  • Stated Objective: Counsel for the petitioner emphasized that the action is intended to address the integrity of public institutions and prevent the use of misleading internal party documentation, noting their readiness to provide supporting court judgments and party records to the police.
