Crisis Averted: ASUU Returns to Classrooms After Federal Government Pays June Salaries
The Federal Government on Tuesday disbursed the June 2025 salaries of university lecturers and other workers in tertiary institutions, prompting the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to direct its members to resume academic activities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This development followed months of tension, as some ASUU chapters had previously adopted a “no pay, no work” stance due to what they described as persistent salary delays spanning over five months.
The delay was reportedly linked to the transition of university workers from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), a process overseen by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
Confirming the resumption, Dr. Haruna Angulu, ASUU branch chairperson at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, said academic staff had returned to duty following the salary payment.
Similarly, ASUU at the Federal University of Kashere issued a circular instructing members to resume lectures, while a memo from the University of Jos bursary also confirmed the release of salaries, effectively ending the strike at the institution.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa attributed the current stability in the tertiary education sector to sustained dialogue, mutual respect, and the Tinubu administration’s firm commitment to resolving issues raised by both academic and non-academic unions.
He noted that for the first time in decades, Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions have enjoyed two years of uninterrupted academic activities.
“This is not a coincidence. It reflects our administration’s deliberate efforts to foster cordial relationships with all education stakeholders,” Alausa said.
He emphasized that the government is gradually meeting union demands with consistency and respect, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at strengthening human capital development.
Dr. Alausa reiterated that the welfare of university staff remains a key priority, assuring that the government would continue to enhance working conditions and safeguard the academic calendar.
“Our students are the soul of the nation, and their continuous education is non-negotiable. The Federal Government remains committed to keeping our institutions open and working hand in hand with all unions to achieve this,” he added.
