Game Changer! Oyo Deploys ₦7.7 Billion Surveillance Aircraft Against Bandits
The Oyo State Executive Council has approved the immediate procurement of two high-tech surveillance aircraft worth ₦7.76 billion to enhance security operations across the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This was announced on Wednesday in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, following the council’s meeting on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the two DA 42 MNG aircraft, equipped with advanced surveillance technology, are designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The aircraft can identify targets from both high and low altitudes and will be used to support the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies in locating and neutralising criminal elements, particularly in remote hideouts.
“These aircraft will significantly strengthen efforts against banditry, illegal mining, and kidnapping across the state’s expansive terrain,” the statement read.
On why fixed-wing aircraft were preferred over helicopters, the government noted that the DA 42 MNG model is cost-effective in terms of maintenance, has easily accessible spare parts, and is compatible with existing Nigerian Air Force assets—allowing for strategic collaboration.
In addition to the aircraft purchase, the council approved a series of major infrastructure projects. This includes ₦83.04 billion earmarked for the continuation of the Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road. The funds will be used for bridges, interchanges, and clearing of the Northeast and Southwest corridors of the 110-kilometre road, specifically in the Molarere, Odo-Oba, and Abiola Ajimobi Technical University zones.
The government reiterated its commitment to completing at least 72 kilometres of the road before the end of Governor Seyi Makinde’s tenure.
Other infrastructure approvals include:
-
₦36.35 billion for asphalt upgrades to Secretariat Road, Trans Amusement–UI–Sango Road, and Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Road.
-
₦6.80 billion for the reconstruction of the Mobil–Oluyole Industrial Estate road network.
-
₦595 million allocated for urgent interventions in the operations and upkeep of the Light-up Oyo Solar Project, with a monthly provision of ₦190 million for ongoing maintenance.
