Africa Meets MAGA: Trump Invites Five African Leaders to White House in High-Stakes Summit
Former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host five African heads of state for a White House lunch on Wednesday, with trade, investment, and regional security expected to dominate discussions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The leaders of Senegal, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, and Gabon—all Atlantic Coast nations—will gather in the State Dining Room at Trump’s invitation. While officials from the visiting countries told AFP the talks would center on economic cooperation and security, the White House has provided few concrete details about its agenda.
The meeting comes amid Trump’s ongoing focus on reshaping U.S. trade policy and securing access to critical minerals—although the invited nations are not major players in rare mineral supply chains, unlike the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of Congo.
This diplomatic gathering follows the Trump administration’s recent announcement celebrating the formal closure of USAID, portraying it as a break from the traditional “charity-based model” of U.S. foreign assistance.
Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai, according to his spokesperson Kula Fofana, accepted the invitation with a strong desire to pivot from foreign aid dependence toward sustainable investment partnerships. “Our interest is to engage with trade and investment partners,” she said.
Similarly, Gabonese presidential spokesman Theophane Biyoghe emphasized that his country views the meeting as an opportunity to attract industrial collaboration: “This is a chance to promote synergies focused on the industrialisation of our economy.”
Geopolitical Undercurrents
The lunch also comes at a time when China and Russia have significantly increased their influence in West Africa. Beijing has expanded its economic footprint through infrastructure investments, while Moscow has supported the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—a military alliance of junta-led Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which border several of the attending nations.
Security concerns, especially around drug trafficking and regional instability, may also feature in discussions. In April, Guinea-Bissau transferred four convicted Latin American drug traffickers to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The West African country has long been a critical hub in the transatlantic cocaine trade.
Before departing for Washington, Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló described the visit as “very important,” saying, “Economically, this is a great opportunity for us,” and expressing hope for expanded U.S. support.
A Cautious Encounter
Notably, the leaders will not hold a joint press appearance with Trump, a move that may be designed to avoid political controversy. Previous foreign leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, have faced politically sensitive or awkward moments during their interactions with Trump.
In a widely criticized episode, Trump showed Ramaphosa a conspiracy-laden video alleging “white genocide” in South Africa—an encounter that drew global backlash.
Meanwhile, four of the five visiting nations—Senegal, Gabon, Liberia, and Mauritania—were among 36 countries the Trump administration reportedly considered adding to a travel ban list, according to an internal memo obtained last month.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt offered minimal insight into the luncheon’s goals, saying only that Trump would “host leaders of five African nations for lunch” in the State Dining Room.
