2027 Dealbreaker? Igbo Youths Condition Tinubu’s Support on Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom

Published

The President-General of the All Igbo Youth Forum (AIYF), Chief Chinedum Obilor, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, if he hopes to secure overwhelming support from the South East in the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during the Forum’s executive meeting held on Tuesday in Umuahia, Abia State, Obilor issued a stern warning that failure to heed this demand would prompt the mobilisation of over one million Igbo youths to make a decisive political statement within the next two months.

Obilor questioned the continued detention of Kanu, especially when other agitators like Sunday Igboho have regained their freedom. He also criticised South East politicians for what he described as their indifference towards Kanu’s plight.

“If the president listens to our plea, I will personally mobilise Igbo youths to support him. But if he ignores us, he will certainly hear from us,” Obilor said.

According to the youth leader, the poor performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East during the 2023 elections was largely due to the Federal Government’s refusal to release Kanu.

He stated: “We received information that our brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, recently won a case in Kenya. We convened this meeting to tell the president directly—Kanu deserves his freedom. He hasn’t done anything worse than Sunday Igboho, who has since been released. So why is Kanu’s case different? Are we Igbo not equal citizens of this country?”

Obilor went on to say: “The Federal Government must understand that the youths of Igbo land are dissatisfied with Kanu’s continued detention. We’ve also noticed that some South East governors, senators, and lawmakers have remained silent and are complicit. They go to Abuja to pursue personal interests while ignoring the demands of the people. Let it be clear—the youths are in charge now, not the politicians.”

He continued: “Let it be known that APC’s poor showing in the South East during the last election was because of Kanu’s incarceration. If he is not released within two months, we will mobilise over one million Igbo youths to take a political stance. We are ready to negotiate with any party or candidate who commits to securing Kanu’s freedom if they come into power.”

Obilor accused politicians of weaponising Kanu’s name for political gain. “Enough is enough. When Kanu appears in court, you don’t see any governors or National Assembly members—except for one, Hon. Obi Obiagocha. These politicians must remember they are in office because of our votes, and we can vote them out. If they can’t speak for Nnamdi Kanu now, they should not dare to use his name for their 2027 ambitions.”

He concluded by appealing directly to President Tinubu: “Our revered leaders like the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu pleaded for Kanu’s release, but the government refused. We are pleading again—use your wisdom, Mr. President, and release him. If you do, you won’t need to buy votes or distribute rice in the South East. This is all we ask. Fulfil this, and you will hear from us at the ballot. Fail us, and you will also hear from us—loud and clear—in 2027.”

The legal firm Ogbeide Associates, representing a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, requesting a formal investigation into PDP secretary Samuel Anyanwu and factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Key aspects of the petition include:

  • Allegations of False Representation: The petition challenges a November 3, 2025, letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which falsely claimed that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had replaced acting national chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum with Mohammed.

  • Contradictory NWC Records: Petitioners assert that the NWC’s November 1, 2025, emergency meeting actually resulted in the suspension of Anyanwu and three other officers due to alleged anti-party activities, and no record exists to support the claim that Damagum was suspended or Mohammed appointed.

  • Legal Precedents: The lawyers referenced an October 10, 2024, Federal High Court judgment that recognizes Damagum as the acting national chairman and prohibits INEC from accepting documents without his signature. Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.

  • Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.

  • Stated Objective: Counsel for the petitioner emphasized that the action is intended to address the integrity of public institutions and prevent the use of misleading internal party documentation, noting their readiness to provide supporting court judgments and party records to the police.
