Terror Unleashed: 7 Police Officers, 1 Soldier Killed in Ruthless Burkina Faso Attack
A series of attacks attributed to jihadists has left seven police officers and one soldier dead in Burkina Faso, a country long embroiled in an Islamist insurgency, local and security sources confirmed to AFP on Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Two of the attacks targeted a police post near the eastern town of Fada N’Gourma, located along the border with Niger, an area where numerous armed groups have entrenched themselves.
A local resident told AFP that “terrorists launched an assault on the police post at the university” just north of Fada N’Gourma last Monday.
In an official report seen by AFP, Wennelebsida Jean-Alexandre Darga, the Director General of Police, confirmed that seven officers were killed in the attack.
“Three days later, the terrorists struck again at the university site, causing significant damage to the building,” a student reported, confirming the June 30 assault.
The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), also known by its Arabic acronym, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Additionally, a Burkinabe security source reported another attack on June 30, targeting an army position near Boulsa, in central Burkina Faso, which was also claimed by JNIM.
The source indicated that the jihadists killed a soldier and captured two civilian volunteer auxiliaries during the assault.
JNIM later released a video showing the two captured auxiliaries, calling on the authorities to work toward their release.
Despite the Burkina Faso junta, which seized power in a coup in September 2022, pledging to prioritize the country’s security, it remains under constant threat from jihadist and other armed groups.
Since 2015, more than 26,000 civilians and soldiers have been killed in the violence, according to conflict monitor ACLED. Over half of these fatalities occurred in the past three years, coinciding with the junta’s rule. The military government rarely comments on such jihadist attacks.
