Former President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), vowing never to betray the party that brought him to power after three failed presidential bids.
Speaking through his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, during an interview on Trust TV’s “30 Minutes”, Buhari addressed growing speculation about a rift between himself and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Shehu dismissed the rumours as baseless, stressing that no official discord exists between the two leaders.
“People are entitled to their opinions and interpretations, but in any formal or official context, there is no distrust or fallout between the Buhari and Tinubu administrations,” Shehu said.
He emphasized that Buhari remains deeply grateful to the APC for helping him secure the presidency after multiple attempts, underscoring the former president’s enduring allegiance to the party.
“For Muhammadu Buhari, the APC is home. He hasn’t forgotten that he contested three times unsuccessfully before the APC coalition was formed. It was that unity that earned him two presidential terms. And what I’ve consistently heard from him is: ‘I will never be ungrateful. I will never betray the party that gave me that opportunity.’”
Addressing public speculation about internal divisions in the ruling party, Shehu said the former president and his allies are unbothered by such narratives.
“We see and read the statements flying around. Do we get disturbed? No,” he said. “It took tremendous sacrifice, determination, and unity to form the APC in 2014. The opposition at the time had tried and failed to defeat the PDP individually. But by coming together, they succeeded.”
He noted that those who were part of the APC’s formation — and who understood the effort it took to build it — are the least likely to try and destabilise the party now.
“Those who witnessed the sleepless nights, negotiations, and coalition-building in 2014 are not the ones working to fracture the APC today,” Shehu concluded.
