Gunmen Still Rule Our Villages – Benue Displaced Persons Reject Return to Hostile Homeland

Currently sheltering at the temporary Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp located at the International Market in Makurdi, no fewer than 3,000 persons displaced from the Yelewata community are holding out after suspected armed herders killed over 200 residents in a coordinated attack.
When our correspondent visited the camp on Sunday, it was reliably gathered that local traditional rulers and stakeholders from the community had begun pressuring the displaced persons to return, reportedly due to growing concerns over the infiltration of the camp by non-indigenes.
“These outsiders are now benefiting from relief materials meant for us—the actual survivors of Yelewata,” said Uker Amos, a 41-year-old resident. He revealed that some survivors protested on Saturday against the return directive from their traditional leader.
“We gathered at the camp’s entrance to say we won’t go back unless proper security measures are put in place,” Amos said.
Speaking via telephone on Sunday, the Information Officer of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Tema Ager, confirmed that the Yelewata traditional council was encouraging displaced persons to return. However, he noted that the IDPs had refused, demanding assurances of safety before considering such a move.
“They insist they will only return once the government guarantees the community is secure. Some of them even staged a protest to register their concerns,” Ager said.
He added that the government would evaluate the security situation before taking any final decision on their resettlement.
Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Aondowase Kumde, recently disclosed that the IDP camp had been infiltrated by individuals unrelated to the attack, including market women, local residents, and suspected criminals. He revealed that at least 50 such infiltrators had been apprehended.
