Enough is Enough!’ – Tinubu’s Govt Tells IMF to Back Off Amid Mounting Economic Pressures

In its recent Article IV report released Monday, the IMF acknowledged some of President Bola Tinubu’s policy moves—such as fuel subsidy removal—but advised the government to adopt a more effective budgetary framework. It also urged the redirection of subsidy savings into critical infrastructure and social investments. Additionally, the Fund suggested that once Nigeria’s cash transfer system is fully operational, tax rates should be aligned with regional averages.
Responding on Tuesday via Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, strongly criticised the IMF’s position, describing its tone as alarmist and counterproductive.
“This administration has implemented some of the boldest and most difficult reforms Nigeria has seen in years,” Fasua said. “From tax reform bills that ease burdens on low-income earners to measures supporting small businesses—these changes have only just begun to take root. Yet, we’re constantly bombarded by overly critical and often fatalistic commentary, especially from the IMF.”
Fasua further described the IMF’s frequent commentary on Nigeria as “heckling,” noting that such regular statements create unnecessary panic and confusion among citizens and investors alike.
Highlighting Nigeria’s fiscal discipline, he disclosed that the country recently repaid $3 billion to the IMF from its COVID-19 loan package—an obligation many other nations are yet to meet.
“We’re not asking for applause, but we do deserve some breathing space,” he said. “They acknowledge our reforms, but immediately demand more. It feels like we’re caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.”
Fasua warned that the IMF’s continued public criticisms risk alienating citizens from the government by ignoring the severity of economic challenges inherited from past administrations.
“This is like trying to fully restore a crumbling house where the roof has been removed and the foundation is still being rebuilt, yet you’re being told to make it instantly livable. That’s not realistic,” he concluded.
