Ladoja Rises! 10 Key Facts About Ibadan’s Likely Next Olubadan After Olakulehin’s Death

Oba Olakulehin passed away on Monday, July 7, at the age of 90, barely a year after his coronation.
In line with the traditional rotational succession system, which alternates the Olubadan throne between the Egbe Agba (civil) and Balogun (military) lines, the next monarch will be chosen from the Egbe Agba line. As the most senior High Chief from that line, Ladoja is next in line for the crown.

Early Life & Education
Rashidi Ladoja was born on September 25, 1944. He attended Ibadan Boys’ High School (1958–1963) and Olivet Baptist High School (1964–1965). -
Higher Education Abroad
He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège in Belgium (1966–1972), and later worked with Total Nigeria for 13 years before venturing into private business in 1985. -
Entry into Politics
Ladoja was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 1993 during the Third Republic. During the Abacha transition era, he was a member of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP). -
Governor of Oyo State
He was elected Governor of Oyo State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and assumed office on May 29, 2003. -
Impeachment Saga
On January 12, 2006, he was controversially impeached by state lawmakers, with his deputy, Adebayo Alao-Akala, taking over. -
Reinstatement by the Courts
The Appeal Court and later the Supreme Court ruled the impeachment unconstitutional. Ladoja was reinstated and returned to office on December 12, 2006. -
EFCC Investigation
In August 2008, the EFCC arrested Ladoja over allegations of misappropriating ₦1.9 billion from the sale of government shares during his tenure. -

Friday, August 7, 2026: After a morning departure from his residence, a requiem mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oba-Ile. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at 12:45 p.m. at Labaluyegbe Villa, followed by a reception at Aderonmu Grammar School Field.
The Bangbola Oyewo family of the Ese-Ola Royal House remembered him as a beloved family man, traditional leader, and an inspiration to generations of theatre practitioners. His passing is regarded as the end of an era for the Nigerian theatre community, where he served as an Associate Professor of Drama and a long-standing mentor.
