Fear Grips Community as Gunmen Mock Police, Promise More Attacks After Fatal Raid”

In the footage obtained by SaharaReporters, the assailants openly boasted about the attack and issued fresh threats against security personnel, warning them to stay away from the Okigwe axis.
One officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), has been declared missing following the ambush, sparking fears of abduction.
In the 1-minute 47-second video, the gunmen warned that no police, military, or Department of State Services (DSS) operatives should be seen operating in the area. They accused the security agencies of widespread extortion and extrajudicial killings.
The attackers claimed their assault on the checkpoint was deliberate, alleging that officers manning the post were extorting locals and blocking the road. In the clip, they displayed two firearms—one resembling an AK-47 rifle believed to have been seized from a slain officer.
According to the police, the incident occurred at about 9:00 a.m. near the Old Gariki area in Okigwe. The police team, led by ASP Casmir, came under heavy fire. Police Constable Oluebube was killed during the ambush, and his rifle was taken by the gunmen.
ASP Casmir and his AK-47 are yet to be accounted for, raising fears he may have been abducted. Other officers in the unit returned to base with their weapons and are currently receiving medical attention.
A police statement read: “One PC, Oluebube, was killed in action and his rifle carted away. ASP Casmir and his AK-47 rifle are missing. The rest of the team has returned safely and is undergoing treatment.”
Authorities have launched a manhunt to locate the missing officer and recover the stolen firearm.
