Tensions in Opposition Camp: Atiku, Obi Delay ADC Entry Over Leadership Deal

Published

on

A new report has revealed that former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) are yet to formally resign from their respective parties due to unresolved internal issues within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), particularly regarding the 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Punch, sources within the emerging coalition said both Atiku and Obi are closely monitoring the ADC’s ongoing zoning deliberations. They noted that once the party concludes its power-sharing framework, particularly on who gets the presidential slot, those aligned with the decision—especially key contenders—will officially join the coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

A coalition insider disclosed that the ADC leadership has already initiated internal processes to prepare for defections. Once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases the official timetable for the 2027 elections, the ADC plans to mobilise its structures nationwide to welcome a wave of high-profile defections and formal memberships.

Though Obi has not officially defected to the ADC, he has publicly expressed his allegiance to the coalition’s agenda. Atiku, on the other hand, has remained silent, but sources within the alliance are confident that the former Vice President will seek the 2027 presidency under the coalition’s platform.

For now, both politicians and many of their loyalists remain within the PDP and LP. One source described the delay as “worrisome,” stressing that their formal defection would give millions of Nigerians the confidence to follow suit.

“We were expecting them, or at least their key allies, to resign from their parties and formally declare for the ADC before the official unveiling of the coalition platform on Wednesday,” the source said. “It appears they’re still waiting to see whether the presidential ticket will be zoned to the North or South. But I’m certain they will act once the party finalises that decision.”

Another coalition official said that the alliance is moving according to plan, and that the eventual decision on the presidential ticket will be a pivotal moment.

“Many are joining this movement because they want to unite to oust the failed government of President Tinubu,” the source noted. “The main reason Atiku, Obi, and their allies are yet to switch camps is because conversations around the 2027 ticket zoning are still ongoing. But once the matter is settled, expect a wave of defections.

“The ADC leadership is already working behind the scenes. As soon as INEC announces the election timetable, the party will swing into action, and both leaders, along with their vast networks, will be ready to make their moves.”
